’til tuesday – Voices Carry (1985): Hailing from Boston, ’til tuesday is one of several 1980’s rock bands with couples whose romance had failed. After some involvement in Boston’s punk rock scene, Aimee Mann (lead vocals) formed ’til tuesday in 1983 with her boyfriend Michael Hausman (drums), plus Robert Holmes (guitar) and Joey Pesce (keyboards). By the time their #8 hit single “Voices Carry” and their debut album Voices Carry came out in 1985, Mann and Hausman had split up, providing songwriting material for their band in the process. The popular music video for “Voices Carry” features Aimee Mann having a fight with her abusive boyfriend, eventually standing up in the middle of a concert audience and singing the lyrics in “Voices Carry”: “He said, shut up! He said, shut up! Oh God, can’t you keep it down?”
Voices Carry also includes two follow-up singles, “Looking Over My Shoulder” and “Love in a Vacuum”. Unfortunately, ’til tuesday never had another big hit. After two more albums, Aimee Mann left the band to start a successful solo career.
