Thin Lizzy – Jailbreak (1976): Thin Lizzy is an Irish hard rock band that is fronted by Phil Lynott, a Black man (actually mixed-race), who scored a massive hit single “The Boys Are Back in Town” that is taken from Jailbreak, their sixth and most successful album. “The Boys Are Back in Town” was a worldwide hit, reaching #8 on the U.K. charts and #12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Other popular singles from Jailbreak are “Cowboy Song” and the title song “Jailbreak”. The band name comes from Tin Lizzie, a nickname of the Model T Ford (by way of a British comic book character of that name), the first affordable car whose production marks the beginnings of the assembly line. Thin Lizzy features a twin lead-guitar assault and more thoughtful and even poetic lyrics than are normally found in the hard rock world.
Phil Lynott writes from the standpoint of a working-class outsider, and also as a Black man in the virtually all-white world of hard rock and heavy metal bands. Propelled by the success of Jailbreak that performed almost as well on the record charts as “The Boys Are Back in Town”, Thin Lizzy remained hard rock superstars through the end of the 1970’s and beyond, particularly in the U.K. Phil Lynott died in 1986 at the age of 36, a few years after starting his solo career.
