The Blues at Newport 1964, Part 2 (Various Artists) (1965): The “Part 2” album left more of an impression on me than did the “Part 1” album, though both feature fine blues music. Artists on The Blues at Newport 1964, Part 2 are Mississippi John Hurt, Skip James, Rev. Robert Wilkins, Elizabeth Cotten, and Willie Doss. A faithful cover of Wilkins’ “The Prodigal Son”, based on Jesus’s parable, was included on Beggars Banquet, one of my very favorite Rolling Stones albums. Elizabeth Cotten (misspelled on the album as Elizabeth Cotton) wrote “Freight Train” when she was just 12 years old. Pete Seeger’s family arranged to have her record an album in 1957 called Folksongs and Instrumentals; “Freight Train” became a Top 5 hit in the U.K.
