I looked it up: The Republicans and the Democrats have now split evenly the elections from John Kennedy through Barack Obama – the score is 7 and 7. More interestingly still, the Republican and the Democrats also split evenly the elections before that – from Theodore Roosevelt through Dwight Eisenhower – and again, it is 7 and 7. It is necessary to go all the way back to William McKinley (who was elected in 1900) before you reach a period when Republicans have won a clear majority of these elections.
