It’s past time for me to give a report on the Wanda Jackson concert in Bay St. Louis. She was belting them out like she was still in her 20’s, just like they said she was. In order to establish their rockabilly chops, the backing band opened the show by performing a portion of Link Wray’s “Rumble” (you might recall a paean to that song in last month’s UARB post). Wanda’s opening song was “There’s a Party Goin’ On”, the title song on the reissued LP that I had with me, hoping for an autograph. Also early on was one of my all-time TOP TEN, “Funnel of Love”; Wanda said that this song had gotten a lot more attention in the past 10 years. But this wasn’t just an oldies act; she did some songs from her two new albums: the 2011 comeback album produced by Jack White, The Party Ain’t Over, plus her new one, Unfinished Business. One of them was an Amy Winehouse song, “You Know That I’m No Good”, which was just terrific. And yes, I did get that autograph! What a fine night that was.
