Forty years ago, and the day after my 19th birthday, May 4, 1970, we heard about the shootings at Kent State University. Even at good old “cow college” (North Carolina State University), the campus erupted. I was still a conservative Republican back then, and we came up with a pro-Nixon group. (Don’t feel that way now, of course). We booked a history professor and a couple of other speakers in the largest lecture hall in the then-new-ish physics/chemistry building and had it filled to the brim. It had all calmed down by the fall of 1970, but that was a time I will never forget.
