Songwriter Credits
Milan is listed as the songwriter on all tracks on I Am What I Am under the name “M. Rodell“; on the first 45, the songwriter’s name is shown as Milan Rodelle (which is presumably a misspelling). As verified in the liner notes, the album is unusual for pop music albums of the times in this regard.[1][2] There are three music publishing companies listed for the songs on the album: Jonathan Glenn Music, Nom Music, and Pine Knob Music.[2]
Release Data

I Am What I Am was released in the LP format on 20th Century Fox in 1964 in both monaural and stereophonic editions (catalogue numbers TFM 3149 and TFS 4149, respectively).[1] The first and last songs on Side 1 were released as the first single on the same record label (catalogue number 478), also in 1964.[3] The second single from the album was “Runnin’ Wild” b/w “Angel’s Lullaby“.
Nature of the Music
The style on I Am What I Am is very much in the early 1960’s pop music tradition, and most of the songs are ballads; thus, the music is not typical of the garage rock classics for which Milan is better known. Probably “Runnin’ Wild” is the song that most foreshadows the directions where Milan would head with his music later in the decade. However, end to end, the album is highly enjoyable; the songwriting in particular is first rate, as are the arrangements (though they are definitely of the period). Milan has a beautiful voice, and the singing on this album enhances the enjoyment of that aspect of his later recordings.
