Gloria Estefan – Cuts Both Ways (1989): After a decade of serving as the lead singer with Miami Sound Machine – which remains her backing band – Cuts Both Ways is Gloria Estefan’s debut solo album. Hit songs from the album include the title song “Cuts Both Ways”, “Don’t Wanna Lose You” (her second #1 hit song), and “Get on Your Feet”. While on tour in support of this album, Estefan’s tour bus was struck by a semi-truck, fracturing her spine, injuries from which Gloria Estefan eventually recovered. Estefan was already a leading Latin female singing star, but the publicity surrounding the crash brought her even greater fame. In November 2015, a musical called On Your Feet! debuted on Broadway, based upon the life of Gloria Estefan and her husband and her musical partner for longer than that, Emilio Estefan, Jr. She has said of him: “He was my first and only boyfriend.” In 2019, On Your Feet! had a run in London’s West End also. Gloria Estefan received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017.
