I had a front yard full of kittens this morning: At least three, and what looked like two moms watching them – unless daddy tomcat decided to show up, and that doesn’t seem like him. 🙂 They were definitely cute, but our neighborhood is already loaded with feral cats, so it was kind of sad also.

As a postscript to this story from earlier in the week, I came out of my home office later that morning to get the paper and noticed a kitten lying in the street. As I approached, I realized that it must have been hit by a car, so I used the newspaper plastic bags to carefully pick it up and put in my garbage can for disposal. That afternoon, when I returned home, I noticed that there was a dead mole prominently lying in our sidewalk (it was gone the next morning). As I thought about it over the next several days, I realized that the mother cat might have intended that as a gift to me for what I had done for her child. I had only watched the kittens and mother cats from inside (mostly from my office but also from the front door) and hadn’t thought they had even noticed me. It is a very precious memory that I will remember until I die. Has anyone else out there had a similar experience?
