Those of you who have been around me lately know that my emotions are closer to the surface than usual. But I literally teared up when I read of the passing of a true gentleman, Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii; he has been representing the state of Hawaii for as long as there has been a state of Hawaii (since 1959), with all but three of those years in the Senate. Besides being a true war hero and quietly breaking down racial barriers: He’s a Japanese-American – he was even among those that our country shamefully rounded up and put in camps in the wake of Pearl Harbor; he was in town for that very event in fact – he is a model Senator about whom I have never heard so much a whisper against from anyone over his entire career. Our country is poorer indeed with his unexpected death.
