Another quite under-appreciated rock musician has died – one of the first singer/songwriters actually, Lesley Gore. Best known for teen hits like “It’s My Party” (producer Quincy Jones’ first smash hit decades before working with Michael Jackson on Thriller), she also had an early feminist anthem with “You Don’t Own Me” and co-wrote a song for the movie Fame with her brother Michael Gore, “Out Here on My Own”. More recently, she has appeared on Broadway in Smokey Joe’s Café. I have been collecting her albums for years, and she nails every song. She will be missed.
