A true legend in New Orleans music has passed. Allen Toussaint worked mostly behind the scenes in producing classics like “Mother-in-Law” by Ernie K-Doe, “Ya Ya” by Lee Dorsey, and “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” by Jessie Hill (later an early hit by Ike and Tina Turner). He also played with the early funk band The Meters. His best known song is probably “Fortune Teller”, a real hoot of a song that was recorded by the Rolling Stones and the Who, among others. He recently recorded an album with Elvis Costello in response to Hurricane Katrina. Don’t know about other places, but we hear about him all the time down here on the Gulf Coast.

May everything he’s gonna do gonna be funky, way over yonder!
