David Allan Coe – The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy (1974): Along with the better-known Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Jr., Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, and others, David Allan Coe is one of the leading lights of the “outlaw country” movement dating from the late 1960’s that was led by songwriting country artists who were trying to return country music to its roots. To some extent, and obliquely analogous to the punk rock movement in the mid-1970’s, outlaw country was a reaction to the slick “Nashville Sound” that had come to dominate what was then called country and western music. The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy is David Allan Coe’s third album and his first country music album. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #40 on its “50 Country Albums Every Rock Fan Should Own” list.
