Chuck Berry and Others β Chuck and His Friends (1974): Chuck and His Friends was irresistible to me: a full album of Chuck Berry classics plus two other albums of a wide variety of music from the 1950βs and 1960βs. Chuck Berry was the man who is most directly responsible for rock and roll as we know it today. John Lennon was once quoted as saying: βIf you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it βChuck Berryβ.β Ted Nugent has said: βIf you donβt know every Chuck Berry lick, you canβt play rock guitar.β Besides the usual suspects like βMaybelleneβ, βJohnny B. Goodeβ, βSchool Daysβ, and βRock and Roll Musicβ, the Chuck Berry album includes five songs that are not on his definitive retrospective album, The Great Twenty-Eight: βVia Rock and Rollβ, βBordeaux in my Piroughβ, βYou Never Can Tellβ, βLonely School Daysβ, and βMy Ding-a-Lingβ.
The latter is a bawdy novelty song that is Chuck Berryβs sole Number One hit. If you ask me, that is more of a reflection on the tastes of the record-buying public than on Chuck Berry. The wide range of material on the other two albums is suggested by the opening cut, Billy Stewartβs eccentric cover of the Porgy and Bess show tune βSummertimeβ. At the risk of naming the entire list of songs, treats to be found here include Little Richardβs groundbreaking βTutti Fruttiβ, the Kingsmenβs hit version of βLouie Louieβ, βRescue Meβ by Fontella Bass, the original version of the swamp rock classic βSuzie Qβ by Dale Hawkins (later recorded by the Rolling Stones and also the first hit song by Creedence Clearwater Revival), βThe βInβ Crowdβ by Ramsey Lewis, the original βBo Diddleyβ by Bo Diddley, Hank Ballardβs βAnnie Had a Babyβ (a follow-up to his landmark R&B classic βWork with Me, Annieβ), βTequilaβ by the Champs, two classics by the Platters, βOnly Youβ and βThe Great Pretenderβ, and a trio of girl-group hits: βHeβs So Fineβ, βRemember (Walkinβ in the Sand)β, and βSoldier Boyβ.
